Academic Language Labs

a fun, low pressure way to help your child master the skills that support academic success

Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary & Academic Language Labs

A good fit for the student who says:
“I read it, but I don't know what it means -or- I can't remember what it said.”

Some students can read the words on a page but struggle to explain what they have read, summarize key information, make inferences, or understand increasingly complex texts. Others find academic vocabulary, multiple-meaning words, word relationships, and context clues difficult to navigate.

Point Speech Pathology and Literacy Lab's small-group Academic Language Labs help students strengthen these essential skills through engaging, clinician-led instruction that makes language and reading comprehension more accessible.

For middle school students especially, struggling with reading comprehension or vocabulary can feel isolating. When schoolwork seems easier for everyone else, students may worry about asking questions, giving an incorrect answer, or what their peers might think. In a small group with students working on similar skills, they can discover that they are not the only ones who find certain things challenging.

Learning alongside peers who understand the struggle can take some of the pressure off. Students have opportunities to ask questions, share ideas, practice new strategies, and build confidence in a supportive environment where the focus is on learning—not keeping up appearances.

The goal is to help students become more confident readers, stronger thinkers, and more capable learners across academic subjects.

Small Groups. Individualized Instruction.

Saturday Labs are intentionally kept small so that students have opportunities to participate, explain their thinking, practice new skills, and receive individualized clinician feedback.

The goal is not simply to get through a lesson.

The goal is for students to understand how language works- and become more capable of using it independently.

Structured Literacy Labs: Helping Struggling Readers Build Skills and Confidence

Is your child struggling to learn to read despite receiving reading instruction at school? If traditional reading methods aren't helping your child make the progress you expected, a more explicit, systematic approach to reading instruction may help.

At Point Speech Pathology and Literacy Lab, our structured literacy labs provide engaging, clinician-led reading instruction designed for children who need additional support with foundational reading skills. Through explicit instruction in phonics, decoding, spelling, and the patterns of written language, children learn how reading works—not simply how to memorize words or guess at unfamiliar ones.

Just as importantly, children participate alongside peers with similar reading skills and learning needs. When a child sees that other children are working on the same skills, reading practice can feel less isolating and more comfortable. Instead of feeling different from classmates who seem to be progressing more easily, children can learn, practice, and celebrate their progress in an environment where they feel understood.

Our structured literacy labs combine evidence-based reading instruction with a supportive, engaging atmosphere where children can strengthen foundational literacy skills, develop confidence, and build a more positive relationship with reading.

If your child is struggling to read, spell, or keep up with classroom reading instruction, structured literacy support may be the next step. Contact Point Speech Pathology and Literacy Lab in Point Pleasant, NJ, to learn whether a structured literacy lab is a good fit for your child.
